STEWARDS’ REPORT OF ENQUIRY HELD INTO RUNNING OF 2016 JAMAICA DERBY

August 16, 2016

STEWARDS’ REPORT FOR

RACE MEET HELD ON SATURDAY, 25TH JUNE, 2016

RACE 12 –    5: 15 P.M.

*** THE 96TH RUNNING OF THE (CAL’SJ JAMAICA TROPHY **** NB 3-Y-O FUTURITY

(TO BE RUN IN HONOUR OF SIR JOHN MORDECAI)

(SPONSORED BY CAL’S MANUFACTURING LTD.)

– 2400 METRES

The race was started at 5:41 p.m.

The Stewards posted the Inquiry Sign to investigate two (2) incidents, one involving horses numbered 3 BIGDADDYKOOL and 6 ORPHEUS leaving the 800 metre point, and another involving horses numbered 7 FUTURE KING, 3 BIGDADDYKOOL and 6 ORPHEUS from the vicinity of the 300 metre point to tire Winning Post.

Jockeys Linton Steadman and Shane Ellis the riders of horses numbered 3 BIGDADDYKOOL and 6 ORPHEUS, respectively, attended the Stewards Room and lodged objections.

Jockey Steadman lodged an objection against horse number 7 FUTURE KING stating that it “step out on me at the top of the lane and the rest of the lane”. He explained to the Stewards that horse number 7 FUTURE KING kept drifting into his path forcing him to change course, which impeded his forward movement.

Jockey Ellis’ objections were:

  • against horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL for causing interference to him leaving the half mile; and,
  • against horse number 7 FUTURE KING and 3 BIGDADDYKOOL for causing interference to him throughout the final 400 metres

The Patrol Judges reported that leaving the 200 metres point horse number 7 FUTURE KING drifted to the right making it uncomfortable for horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL and horse number 6 ORPHEUS.

The Stewards viewed the videotape replay and observed that leaving the 800 metre point of the race, horse number  3 BIGDADDYKOOL  drifted  to the right and  caused  interference  to  horse  number 6  ORPHEUS  which  resulted in ORPHEUS stumbling. They also noted that in the vicinity of the 300 metre point and again near the 200 metre point, horse number 7 FUTURE KING drifted to the right forcing horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL to go to the right which in turn forced horse number 6 OPRHEUS to the right. They further observed that horse number 7 FUTURE KING continued to gradually drift to the right until the horses reached the Winning Post, which caused horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL to also drift to the right.

The Stewards deliberated and concluded that:

  • horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL did cause interference to horse number 6 ORPHEUS leaving the 800 metre point of the race; and,
  • that horse number 7 FUTURE KING did cause intimidation and as a result interference to horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL, which in turn intimidated and interfered with horse number 6 ORPHEUS from the 300 metre point of the race through to the Winning post

Both objections were sustained and as a result, the decision was made to firstly, disqualify horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL and place it behind horse number 6 ORPHEUS for the interference it caused leaving the 800 metre point, then secondly, disqualify horse number 7 FUTURE KING for the intimidation and interference caused to horse number 3 BIGDADDYKOOL from the 300 metre point to the Winning Post, as in the opinion of the Stewards it affected the final outcome of the race.

The race was then cleared at 6:04 p.m.
